Why did you choose UIC and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences?

UIC was my first choice because of its location. My hometown Lagos reminds me of Chicago, so I love it especially. There are so many things to do in Chicago, such as concerts, restaurants, and people, that it is such a fun city to live in.

Choosing Liberal Arts and Sciences wasn’t a difficult decision for me since I have always been passionate about psychology and helping others. In addition, the advisors continued to guide and push me, which just confirmed my decision to attend that college.

How did you choose Psychology as your major?

Having struggled with mental health for a long time, I chose psychology as my major. Growing up in Nigeria, mental health is also regarded as a disgrace or stigma, which means there are few optionsĀ  for support. My first therapist helped me get better after I moved to America for school alongside other things such as prayer, friends, and family. My life has been changed by the help she provided me, and I want to provide that same experience to someone else in need, especially those who cannot afford to find mental health resources.

What has been your favorite class or professor so far?

My favorite class was Psych 100 because it was so educational and the professor was amazing. For first-year students or anyone looking for a general education requirement course, this class is great because it’s easy and interesting. In addition to doing various research projects, writing papers, and doing exams, students also have the opportunity to earn extra credit. Keeping up with the PowerPoint presentations and online homework is my only advice.

What is a project you are currently working on? Or is there an internship you have participated in or one you have applied to during your time at UIC?

The current position I hold at my college is that of a student aide. In addition to helping students register for classes, I also provide them with some helpful information. The summer of next year I plan on doing an internship abroad focusing on medicine, but that will be in the future.

What resources have you connected with and found useful on campus?

I have used the MSLC so many times. My best advice to anyone who is heavily involved with science classes is to visit the MSLC whenever you get the chance. The MSLC really helps you because you get more one-on-one time with TAs and teachers, which allows them to give you all the information you need. Another huge resource is your advisor. Advisors are there to help us not only with classes but also with everyday life, and my advisor has honestly been such an amazing support system for me. My last recommendation for a resource is your teachers and TAs. It is very important to create a relationship with these people because if you need help, you can always contact them. Additionally, you can gain opportunities or even recommendation letters for when you graduate.

Are you a part of any clubs or groups on campus, and how has that impacted your experience as a student?

While I am not currently involved in a club, I have volunteered for the Black Student Union (BSU for short) and the African Student Association (ASA for short). These clubs helped me to get out of my comfort zone and make friends along with giving me a sense of responsibility that I didn’t have before because in high school everything is pretty much done for you. Still, in college, you have to fund and plan everything if you want an event to happen.

If you could give your freshman year self one piece of advice, what would it be?

The one piece of advice I would give my past self is to try something new. College is a scary place, but it is also an opportunity for you to grow and become your best self. You cannot do that if you stay with the same friends or the same group you were with in high school. It is good to be around places that make you feel comfortable, but to really create a great college experience, I believe you should branch out and try different things, especially involving your major.
