test

Name: Karina Bonilla

Major: Biological Sciences

Year in School: Junior, Class of 2025

Why did you choose UIC and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences?

I chose UIC and the College of LAS specifically for two reasons: affordability and location. In comparison to other universities I had applied to, UIC was my most affordable option as I was a recipient of the President’s Award Program. I also was able to receive other additional scholarships as an admitted student after my first year. Secondly, the location of UIC was ideal for me both personally and professionally. Being raised on the southeast side, being close to home and my family was important to me. As UIC is located near the medical district, I knew as a pre-health student that I would be provided with so many opportunities from research, volunteering, and shadowing.

How did you choose your major?

As a pre-health student, I knew I wanted to major something science related. In high school, I enjoyed my biology, chemistry, and anatomy classes the most. After browsing the class curriculum, I decided that majoring in Biological Sciences aligned with my interests but also my professional goal of attending medical school.

What has been your favorite class or professor so far?

After my first year at UIC, I decided to major in Sociology because it was an area of study that genuinely interested me. My sophomore year, I took SOC 215: Sociology of Childhood and Youth with Professor Max Cuddy. The class structure allowed me to really enjoy and learn the material in a way I have never experienced before. The class was discussion based rather than lecture based which allowed me to connect and discuss with my fellow classmates. This structure was something I had not experienced before in comparison to my usual chemistry or biology classes!

What resources have you connected with and found useful on campus? MSLC, advisors, etc.

I have always utilized my academic advisors for my major, minors, and the Honors College. I also love using MSLC for help in my science courses.

Are you a part of any clubs or groups on campus, and how has that impacted your experience as a student?

During my sophomore year I joined Delta Phi Epsilon, a social service based sorority on campus. Joining Greek Life has allowed me to make so many friends at UIC. I also am apart of L@S GANAS and Mujeres en Medicina which allows me to connect with other students in my classes who have similar professional goals as me! Being apart of different organizations has allowed me to make connections in different aspects of my life.

What are your aspirations after graduation? What are you looking to do after graduation?

After graduating, I am planning on taking a gap year followed by medical school! I would like to become a geriatric physician and work with the older population in Chicago.

If you could give your freshman year self one piece of advice, what would it be?

If I could give my freshman year self one piece of advice, it would be to join things that you ate passionate about and enjoy! Involvement has been a key factor in my UIC experience and has allowed me to make so many memories during my college years.
